Gaborone, 20 November 2024 – The Japanese Government, through its embassy in Botswana, officially handed over a generous donation of badminton equipment to the Botswana Badminton Association (BBA) today at the National Stadium in Gaborone.
This event marked Honourable Minister of Sports & Arts Mr. Jacob Kelebeng’s first official engagement in office. In his keynote address, the Minister expressed profound gratitude to His Excellency Setsuo Ohmori, the Japanese Ambassador to Botswana, for the thoughtful donation. The contribution includes essential items such as rackets, shuttlecocks, nets, and playing shoes. The Minister also commended the enduring partnership between the two nations, emphasizing the value of such initiatives in fostering sports development.
In his remarks, Ambassador Ohmori highlighted the efforts of Japanese athletes who collaborated to source the equipment, which was then entrusted to the embassy for donation.
Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) CEO, speaking during the ceremony, applauded the gesture, noting that it comes at an opportune time as Botswana prepares to host the Botswana International Open 2024 from 21–24 November at Otse Police College. He also acknowledged the recent introduction of Air Badminton, which promises to further grow the sport locally.
The event was attended by notable dignitaries, including BNSC Chairperson Mr. Marumo Morule, Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) President Colonel Botsang Tshenyego, representatives from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), BBA President Mr. Modisaotsile Badubi and his executive team, stakeholders, athletes, and members of the media.
This partnership underscores the significance of international collaboration in advancing sports and empowering athletes in Botswana.
