The idea of Botswana Games was conceptualized in 2005 by Botswana National Sport Commission. The idea was to have a national multi-sport event that will be utilized to prepare young Batswana athletes of 19 years of age and under for international multi-sport competitions that includes the African Union Sports Council Region 5 under 20 Youth Games, All Africa Games, Commonwealth Games and the Olympic Games. The games are a biennial event in which athletes who represent their respective districts would compete in a variety of sporting codes. The idea was conceptualized with a variety of purposes including:
- Unearthing the talented athletes from a variety of districts from throughout the country.
- Affording young and emerging athletes an opportunity to compete in competitions that are facilitated in accordance with a variety of international competitions so that they may be exposed to activities that take place at international sporting events.
- Selecting youth teams and preparing them for international sporting events such as the AUSC Region 5 under 20 Youth Games and the All Africa Games.
- Giving the sport administrators at home an opportunity to practice for hosting mega international events
