Women and Sport Botswana

WASBO was formed in 1997 to increase participation of women and girls in sports and other recreational activities. The forum then comprised stakeholders from government, nongovernment organizations, as well as BNSC Affiliates. It was launched as a sub-structure of BNSC in 2000.

WASBO does not have affiliates, but instead it forms structures around the country to facilitate the WASBO activities in such regions. Currently, there are WASBO structures in Francistown, Gaborone, and Maun. Plans are underway to establish more structures in Gantsi, Palapye/Serowe, and Tsabong.

Besides BNSC, WASBO is also affiliated to Women in Sport Zone VI, African Women in Sport Association, Women’s Sport Foundation, and International Women’s Working Group.

Amongst its stakeholders, WASBO counts are all affiliates BNSC, Department of Women’s Affairs, SVM, Department of Sports and Recreation, and Botswana National Olympic Committee. Through WASBO’s efforts, Botswana has seen an increase of women administrators being trained through individual codes, and through Olympic Solidarity.
