Botswana National Sport Commission “the Commission” regrettably informs stakeholders and members of the public that it has had to make a difficult and painful decision of cancelling the Botswana Games that would otherwise be held this year.
The cancellation is largely as a result of the COVID-19 induced restrictions that would make delivery of the Games very difficult, risky and very costly.
Notwithstanding the cancellation, the Commission wishes to assure its stakeholders and the public that it remains fully committed to the Botswana Games project, to the extent that the Games will return as soon as circumstances permit.
The Commission regrets the inconveniences that this cancellation will cause and symphathises with all the athletes, coaches and other would be members of entourages that had looked forward to the Botswana Games this year.
ABOUT BOTSWANA GAMES
The idea of Botswana Games was conceptualized in 2005 by Botswana National Sport Commission. The idea was to have a national multi-sport event that will be utilized to prepare young Batswana athletes of 19 years of age and under for international multi-sport competitions that includes the AUSC Region 5 Games, African Games, Commonwealth Games and the Olympic Games. The games are a biennial event in which athletes who represent their respective districts would compete in a variety of sporting codes. The idea was conceptualized with a variety of purposes including:
- Unearthing the talented athletes from a variety of districts from throughout the country.
- Affording young and emerging athletes an opportunity to compete in competitions that are facilitated in accordance with a variety of international competitions so that they may be exposed to activities that take place at international sporting events.
- Selecting youth teams and preparing them for international sporting events such as the AUSC Region 5 Games and the African Games.
- Giving the sport administrators at home an opportunity to practice for hosting mega international events
